Ameritas began its life in 1867 as The Union Central Life Insurance Company (Union Central), the first chartered life insurance company in Ohio. Named for the newly preserved Union after the Civil War, its initial investors were W.A. Procter and James Gamble of Procter & Gamble fame. In 1869, another company, The Masonic Mutual Relief Association, began providing death benefits to widows of Masons when President Andrew Johnson signed its Congressional charter. Eighteen years later, a third company, Old Line Bankers Life Insurance Company of Nebraska (Bankers Life), started business in Lincoln, Nebraska. It quickly grew from a local company into one of the country’s largest insurance companies. In 1922, Masonic Mutual Relief Association changed its name to Acacia Mutual Life Association, and in 1988, Bankers Life Nebraska changed its name to Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. Finally, in 2006, Ameritas Life, Acacia Life and Union Central Life merged into Ameritas, with the Ameritas Mutual Holding Company as their parent company. Today, the company provides a wide array of insurance products for individuals and families, including the following:

  • Life insurance
  • Dental, vision and hearing insurance
  • Disability income insurance
  • Retirement plans and annuities
