Tracing Unum’s Evolution: From Provident and Paul Revere to UnumProvident Corporation

The Unum Group has 10,000 employees worldwide and is the largest disability insurer in the U.S. Their subsidiaries cover 44% of the employees of the Fortune 500 with group disability plans. The Group was formed after Provident purchased Paul Revere in 1997 and then Unum merged with Provident in 1999. The name of the new company, in 1999, was UnumProvident Corpporation. After bad publicity following the company’s regulatory settlement agreement to reassess hundreds of thousands of disability claim terminations and denials, the name was changed to “Unum”.
